Vari is the name of both the historical village and the destination beach. The village of Vari (population: ~1,500) is just 9km away from Hermoupolis. Visitors to the area will find the village fairly self-sufficient in terms of basic supplies, dining choices, and tourism accommodations. Archaeological evidence corroborates the fact that the village is the island’s oldest one, with human habitation starting as early as 4,000 BC. The village’s lovely terrain is complemented by the imposing Goulandris tower house rising over the sea. Local residents are engaged mostly in fishing, farming, and the local businesses. Vari’s seamless infrastructure and deep-seated services culture makes it a preferred destination for the numerous visitors to the area, as it offers a wide range of impeccable accommodations and excellent food.
It is the beach of Vari, however, that is the main pole of attraction, instantly winning visitors over with its pure Cycladic ambience and shallow crystal-clear waters. For those seeking more variety in their beach and swimming choices, the nearby beaches of Achladi, Fabrika, Embati, and Santorinioi are excellent alternatives. The best time to visit is around August 15, the date when the local traditional fair takes place in the area.
